SILVER WEDGE tribute

SILVER WEDGE was a wonderful racehorse for his owners Mr and Mrs Robins winning on the flat, over hurdles and in chases collecting almost £200,000 between 1993 and 2000 including a Royal Ascot Flat race and The Long Walk Hurdle, back at Ascot. In his time he raced against horses such as TEAATRAL, BACCHANAL, DEANO’S BEANO, UPGRADE, LADY REBECCA, CYORGO and CALLISOE BAY – which gives you an idea of his class.

Initially he was looked after in retirement by David Owen in Cambridgeshire where he befriended a grey mare called RAFFELINA. Sadly both horses needed to move and were looking for a place to spend the rest of their retirement. WEDGE came to HEROS and settled despite no longer having RAFFELINA for company. But in a happy twist of fate the mare made her own way to HEROS and they were happily re-united, acting as an old married couple. Sadly RAFFELINA was PTS a few years ago and SILVER WEDGE spent the rest of his days with a small group of geldings including Scottish Grand National winner RUN FOR PADDY.

Right to the end his character was strong – were you going to meet happy WEDGE or grumpy WEDGE? It often depended on if you had carrots or not, but the HEROS team feels very honoured to have known him.

His owners Mr and Mrs Robins have visited regularly during his retirement and we know how sad they will be, but also how privileged they feel to have had him in their lives. They are leading examples of  what being a responsible owner is all about.

Thank you SILVER WEDGE for so many wonderful memories and RIP.
