Knowledge-based courses in aspects of riding, horse care and management…

Short, practical and knowledge-based courses in a variety of aspects of riding, horse care and management (including racing-specific), for those who wish to further develop their confidence, skills and knowledge.

We find there is a huge amount of diversity in the students who apply for work experience at HEROS Charity, from those with an equestrian background, who wish to gain experience at handling thoroughbreds before considering a career in racing, through to others who are pursuing veterinary or physiotherapy routes. In addition, students may wish to complete research or gather data for dissertations or final year projects.

Work experience is very rewarding and educationally worthwhile…

No matter what the background and circumstances of the students we know that work experience at HEROS Charity is very rewarding and educationally worthwhile.

  • Enabling students to gain knowledge and key skills
  • Providing a solid foundation in the area of thoroughbred husbandry, retraining and rehabilitation, which can be transferred to other equine sectors
  • Offering university placements to students and a residential placement – on-site self-catering and shared accommodation is also available.

School work-experience is also regularly requested and HEROS Charity is happy to accommodate but please do get in touch to discuss your specific requirements or review our [14-16 flexible learning] package.

Flexible learning designed for school pupils aged 14-16……

Our 14-16 vocational courses provide a practical option for students currently in Year 10 who are looking for alternative education when progressing in to Year 11. The courses run alongside GCSE options taken at school.

The different 1st4Sport courses allow students to learn about different aspects of horse care, working both in a classroom and on the stable yard.

The courses enables students to either go out and work practically with horses or to move on to study a full time course or apprenticeship.

Students will learn to safely work with horses in different situations. The courses CAN include a riding module; riding skills will be assessed at interview, or alternatively students could focus on practical horse care, racehorse care, rehabilitation and therapy or breeding.

Students who successfully complete the course(s) may wish to continue on and study full time at HEROS on the HEROS Racing Staff Academy (in partnership with Abingdon and Witney College) or at another college or enrol onto a work based apprenticeship.
