Traineeships are an ideal opportunity for young people who are motivated to get a job but are still lacking the skills and experience that employers require. If you have been unsuccessful applying for Apprenticeships due to lack of skills and/or experience then you might be a good candidate for a traineeship.
The purpose of a traineeship is to prepare individuals for employment; so on completion of the course the trainee must ideally progress into employment, an apprenticeship, Diploma course of a higher level than the traineeship or Further Education.
Level 1 in Horse Care is a fundamental pathway to an occupational role in all equine businesses and vital to an industry that contributes over £8bn to the British economy each year.
Trainees will be developing a skill set that prepares them for entering an industry where they must adhere to; safe working practices, be prepared to work in all weather conditions and often in “out of hours” situations. They will be required to have dedication, commitment and the physical and mental toughness to cope with the rigours of the role.
Trainees will develop their theoretical knowledge and understanding, practical experience and empathy to maintain the horses’ physical and psychological well-being within a safe working environment.
This is a practical, “hands on” course where trainees will work under supervision individually and as part of a team. They will be involved with feeding, grooming, cleaning equipment, and handling, preparing, exercising the horses and carrying out routine yard duties.
As part of the Traineeship, the student will also complete 70 hours work experience, a course in Employability, which includes; interview preparation and undertaking an interview, for employment or to access a further education course.
Functional Skills in Maths an English are a key part of a traineeship and learners should be working one level above what they already hold. However if they do not achieve them within the traineeship and they are progressing to an apprenticeship they can be completed within the apprenticeship.
Traineeships can be up to 12 months but we advise they take around 6 months to complete.
The following are not mandatory for entry onto this course however we encourage all potential students to aim to have 5 GCSE’s at Grades A-D (or 9-4 on the new grading system), or equivalent, including Maths and English.
This course is appropriate for individuals who may not have many prior academic achievements or relevant experience.
Candidates applying should be:
- Aged 16-24 years,
- 25 with an EHCP unemployed (or work less than 16 hours per week) and have little work experience.
- Motivated to gain work after completion.
- Not be qualified at a higher-level course.
- Not enrolled on an apprenticeship.
This course is Government funded for 16 – 24 year olds and 25 year olds with an EDH Plan.
Work Based blended delivery programme consisting predominantly of on-site HEROS Tutor led training and assessment. The majority of the mandatory work experience will be conducted at North Farm Stud, which is on the same site as HEROS Education. There is the opportunity for students to find external work experience placements towards the end of their course if desired.
